About the Department
The Department of Process Engineering is one of the six departments of the Faculty of Manufacturing Technologies Technical University of Košice, with its headquarters in Prešov. It was founded in 2013 and its primary mission is to prepare students in the program renewable energy sources.
During the course of their studies, students in the Renewable Energy Sources program will gain knowledge of methods for the production and distribution of heat, as well as the flow of gases and fluids. They will learn about methods for calculating heat loss in buildings, knowledge of heat source design, basic knowledge of boiler room types and equipment, fuels, and combustion. They will gain a detailed understanding of the principles, through the operation and use of renewable energy sources such as heat pumps, photovoltaic cells, solar panels, biomass sources, heat recovery units, and the like.
The course includes instruction on heat transfer, based on which students perform measurements and determine the efficiency of heat production and hot water preparation, learn to calculate distribution losses, and gain a comprehensive understanding of heat production efficiency from the source to the consumer.
The program includes the theory of measuring thermal quantities, such as temperature, pressure, humidity, and the flow velocity of liquids and gases, etc. Attention is also given to the theory of thermal system control, where students become familiar with control elements and control structures (sensors, actuators, servo drives, control valves, and dampers). They will master the basic algorithms for controlling thermal systems so that they can formulate their requirements for specialists in the field of thermal engineering programming.

Collaboration with the Professional World
With its professional focus, the Department of Process Engineering offers opportunities for collaboration in various areas of education and research related to renewable energy sources and process engineering, with an emphasis on the energy and gas industries. The expertise of the department’s faculty enables them to tackle challenging projects in the field of measurement and control of burners, boilers, and heating systems of all categories, regardless of capacity or fuel type.
Part of our work involves designing and implementing solutions to optimize consumption in technological and process equipment for fuel combustion, with a focus on compliance with emission limits. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art measuring equipment for determining the efficiency of heat production and consumption. As part of its research and educational activities, the department devotes considerable attention to designing methodologies for measuring and evaluating all processes related to fuel combustion, heat production, environmentally friendly combustion, and air pollution. Recently, emphasis has been placed on research into the efficiency of multi-valent heat sources based on renewable energy.
The department’s staff have long been developing partnerships with leading companies in the field of thermal and process engineering, such as Testoterm, Siemens, Buderus, Herz, PBS Industry, Schiedel, and others.
As part of its collaboration with high schools, the Department of Process Engineering hosted several field trips. During these tours, students had the opportunity not only to see the department’s equipment but also to directly participate in measurements using selected instruments. Students who prepared a measurement report on a specific topic were also eligible to enter a contest to win a tablet.
